Mount Rinjani Trekking Information

Getting Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani is active volcano on Lombok, a small island in Indonesia. The easier way to reach the mountain is to fly directly to Lombok International Airport in Praya, Lombok (Airport Code: LOP) and then take a long journey to the foot of Rinjani.

There are several driving route options to reach Rinjani mountain from Lombok Airport.

  1. The drive to Senaru, which takes about 2.5–3 hours, passes through Mataram and circle half the island before arriving at Senaru village and the ascent route to Rinjani in the west.
  2. Sembalun takes about 2–2.5 hours going through the east side of Mount Rinjani with the routes Praya–Kopang–Masbagik–Aikmel, then finally reaching the village of Sembalun on the east side of Mount Rinjani (the close ascent route to Mount Rinjani summit).

If you cannot fly directly to Lombok, the best way is to transit through Jakarta or fly to Bali and take a fast boat to Lombok . . .continue

Mount Rinjani Lombok – Overview

Mount Rinjani, located in the north of Lombok, stands at a majestic 3726 m, making  Indonesia’s second highest peak. This mountain is a sacred place for the people of Lombok, Sasak, and Balinese like. At the summit, the holy gods live.

A large crater lake Segara Anak, located at 2000 m above sea level, is the destination of many pilgrims, who make the annual trek up the step slope in order to place offering to the gods in the lake itself. Route Options to the Summit Rinjani

To climb such impresif mountain is  unforgettable experience. Such a trek can start at Senaru in the north or at Sembalun and Timbanuh in the east of Lombok. However, if you are wonder whether to start from Senaru, Sembalun, or Timbanuh,  probably comes down to when you want to summit.

If you want to summit earlier in the trip, then choose Sembalun. If not, then choose Senaru. It’s a more beautiful and shaded route than Sembalun, but you need a minimum 3-day trip to reach the summit.

For the more experienced trekker or adventurous spirit, check out the Timbanuh route for a 3- or 4-day trip to the Timbanuh crater rim, the 2nd summit (3.500 m), a new volcano, Segara Anak Lake, hot healing water, and the summit Rinjani (3.726 m).

Route

Best time to climb Rinjani

The best Mount Rinjani hike course during the April-November dry season. Generally, the rainy season, from January to March, close the trekking trails.

In recent years, the early months of the ‘dry season’ have become more pron to rain, and you should be prepared to encounter heavy rain and low visibility with slippery tracks under foot at any time, particularly in the afternoon.

Cost and Tour Operators

Unfortunately, Rinjani trekking prices and costs to climb Mount Rinjani are not cheap, ranging from 150 to 350 dollars per person. These costs vary depending on the well-known tour operator, whether the package is private or shared, the number of days of the trip, the number of people in your group, and whether the commission is due to individuals or agencies.

In the off-season, some guide companies will charge as little as 80 dollars per person for two nights to share packages with up to 12 people in a group.

It is important to check that they are properly experienced, equipped, and provisioned. Ensure your trek price is all-inclusive of any extra charges for transportation, accommodation, provisions, guide and porter fees, and the Rinjani National Park entrance fee.

Accommodation

Trekking Mount Rinjani Lombok usually takes 2 days or more, and you should always start early in the morning. Of course, you’ll need a comfortable bed in Senaru or Sembalun before starting climbing the next day. Most tour agencies have provided and organized everything you need to sleep one night before climbing the mountain at the hotel in Senaru or Sembalun village, and after the trek, they will give you special appreciation.

The best accommodation before climbing Rinjani is available on the Senaru ascent route. Please follow the links below:

Packing Lists

We recommend packing all your items for the Mt. Rinjani trek program into a small backpack that weighs no more than 10 kg.

  1. Quick Dry Synthetic Material:
You should wear a shirt (which can be either short or long sleeve) as the base layer, a good-quality fleece jacket or woolen pull-over as the middle layer, and a thick windproof jacket as the outer layer. A pair of waterproof and windproof trekking pants is desirable, as is a pair of woolen gloves, a beanie, and a scarf for additional cold protection.
  2. Trekking shoes:
For better ankle grips and to keep loose soil out of the shoes, choose mid- or high-cut shoes over low-cut ones.
  3. Trekking Poles:
Highly recommended for the summit climb, as the terrain towards the summit is very steep and consists of very fine and loose volcanic soil that may cause one to slip down easily.
  4. Others :
Ensure you have a water bottle, torch or flashlight, toiletries, sun block or lotion, a hat or cap, sun glasses, and spray for muscle or balance. Insect repellent, Camera, mobile phone, and power bank.

The packing list above assumes you are going with a guide, and porters carry all camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mats, and toilet tent), cooking gear, water, and foods.

Guide and Porters

Most Rinjani mountain guides and porters are natives of Senaru and Sembalun, the two ascent routes of Mount Rinjani; some of them hold licenses and have extensive experience guiding trekkers to climb the mountain.

Mount Rinjani guides and porters are:

  1. Experienced and licensed.
Experienced and licensed guides and porters, working for a reputable travel organizer that sells packages, command a higher fee than standard guides or porters.
  2. I have experience, but I lack a license.
Use by the travel organizer who is selling the standard package, and they will be compensated with the standard fee of $20/day for guides plus an additional $20 for summit fees or $17/day for porters.
  3. New and lacking experience.
The travel organizer typically employs this strategy, offering a package at a discounted rate or a cost-effective sharing plan, while paying guides and porters according to the standard salary.

On the other hand, some local travel organizers in Sembalun or Senaru have their own guides and porters who are well-trained and experienced in guiding guests to climb Mount Rinjani. These guides strive to provide the best service possible, hoping to receive tips from their guests and positive reviews for their company.

If you want to get good services and enjoy climbing Rinjani Mountain, do not take the cheap package.
